Nero MediaHome 4

The Nero MediaHome software app is an inexpensive home media management software option to use a Windows PC to stream media content to a variety of devices, like the XBOX 360, which can then be connected to an HDTV or a stereo surround system to enjoy your media. It’s not quite as robust as some of the other media servers on our list, such as the Apple TV OS or Windows Home Server, but it’s still a solid option. It lands in fourth place on our list.

Ease of Use:

Installing and setting up Nero MediaHome home media management software is easy. Once it’s set up, and all devices have been found and added (see “Play Digital Content” for some of the devices), it’s simple to begin streaming. Not only are you streaming videos, music and photos, but you’re also streaming whatever is on your Windows PC desktop or web browser. You can pull up a Power Point presentation for example and what you see on the monitor will be seen on compatible devices.

Video and Sound Quality:

The video and sound quality as it streams across the media server network is surprisingly good, with high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) video supported. Music sounds great, and pics look terrific on an HDTV.

Purchase or Rent Content:

You can’t purchase or rent movies or TV shows directly through MediaHome home media management software, but if you’re renting or buying through a service such as CinemaNow directly from a Windows PC, it shouldn’t be a problem streaming to other devices to view on a television. Play Digital Media Content:

You can easily play digital content via streaming to compatible devices, such as the XBOX 360, PlayStation 3 and other units that are DLNA- or UPnP-compatible, such as TV tuner cards, all of which will grant your media to be streamed and displayed on various devices. Other Windows PCs are also supported.

The ideal devices that we recommend are the supported gaming consoles, since many families have an XBOX 360 or PlayStation 3. They include HDMI-outs for a pure digital signal with the ideal audio and video quality.

Nero MediaHome grants the streaming of live tv (through the network), movies, videos, music and pics to the devices. If there’s a compatibility issue, state a video or song won’t play back properly because it isn’t a supported format, the software will perform a conversion (also called transcoding) to a format that is supported, all in real-time, while you watch a video or listen to a song.

Internet Content:

Since you’re essentially streaming everything from the main Windows PC with Nero MediaHome on it, you’ll be able to access any world wide web content available on your browser. This means you can enjoy videos on a number of websites such as YouTube or Vimeo; social networking sites; music sites; podcasts (both video and audio); and more.

Nero provides several tech support options for this home media management software, including telephone, email and live chat contact and a FAQs/Knowledge Base. We called tech support with a couple of questions. We got through to a live person pretty fast and they were very helpful. MediaHome 4 will run on Windows PCs with Windows 7 or earlier.

Summary:

Affordably priced, Nero MediaHome is a solid choice for a Windows-based computer to set up a network and stream your digital media throughout your home. It may not be quite as robust as the Apple TV OS or Windows Home Server, but it’s still a very capable software application.
