IBM rolls out free cloud software development tool
IBM announced this week a cloud-based collaborative software development tool that is being offered free to students now for academic use only but is expected to become a commercial service at some point in the future.
Called the Jazz Hub and available directly at Jazz.net, the cloud-based software development service is based on IBM’s software development tool Rational Team Concert. Particularly aimed at use by college students, Jazz Hub is an idea from IBM to encourage a new generation of software developers to work more collaboratively and in the cloud.

RELEASE: IBM announces collaboration tools for large-scale software development
“It’s Rational Team Concert in the cloud,” stated Harish Grama, vice president of product development at IBM Rational, who spoke about the Jazz Hub during his keynote presentation at IBM’s annual software developers conference, Innovate. Students can register in under a minute and immediately start software development in the cloud.
IBM already has thousands of students trying it out, and one University of Florida professor attending the Innovate conference stated she expects to include use of the Jazz Hub in her course curriculum.
“I’m excited to have this for use,” stated Aditi Mukherjee, lecturer in the department of information systems and operations management at the University of Florida. Mukherjee stated she expects integrating use of Jazz.net into her class curriculum. “I’ll include it in classes next semester for systems analysis and design.”
IBM’s Jazz platform, which provides underlying functionality for more collaborative software development between software developers, managers, software and quality testers and those with responsibility for expressing project requirements, is being introduced into a number of IBM software development products.
With the Jazz Hub cloud service, there is no download or installation required, stated Gina Poole, vice president of marketing at IBM Rational. “Literally, within a minute, you can be registered and going on a project.”
