Apple sucks porn domain names from Israelis
Apple has succeeded in prying loose a gaggle of iPhone-related domain names that were being used by a porn purveyor to redirect to its digital rumpy-pumpy wares.
As The Reg reported earlier this month, Apple filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) alleging misuse of ‘iPhone” in the seven domain names in question: the clearly porn-pushing iphonesex4s.com, iphonexxxforce.com, iphoneporn4s.com, and porn4iphones.com; the possibly tittilational iphonecamforce.com and iphonecam4s.com; and the rather demure – though clearly trademark-violating – iphone4s.com.
On Tuesday, Domain Name Wire reported that Apple had dropped the complaint after the domain names were handed over to them. A WhoIs check now shows the names under the ownership of the brand-protection bureau MarkMonitor.
Formerly, a WhoIs check showed the identity of the domain name’s owner to be protected by Moniker’s privacy service, but Domain Name Wire reports that the privacy shield was later removed, showing the owner to be an unnamed Israeli company.
However, despite Apple’s victory for decency, proprietry, and brand protection, as of midday Tuesday Cupertino time, all seven domain names still redirected to the decidedly NSFW website Free Naughty for Mobile.
Clearly, some DNS cleanup is still needed. ®
