Christmas burglars steal gifts from Lafayette homes

Lafayette – It’s a case of “reverse Santa Claus” in two Lafayette neighborhoods. Burglars broke in and took Christmas gifts right from under the tree.

Whisper Valley Drive residents are talking loudly about what happened in their neighborhood.

“It’s scary. It’s hard to feel safe,” stated Jennifer Frazee.

Police state two men broke into a home Tuesday morning and stole all the Christmas gifts from under the tree.

“How low is that?” wondered Frazee.

It gets even lower. This all happened while the residents were upstairs sleeping.

“That’s what is scary that they came in when they were home,” commented one neighbor.

According to police the thieves opened all the gifts outside, and took only certain things.

“A digital camera, a Wii station, a PlayStation 2 and some miscellaneous items,” stated Sgt. Eric Wallace, Lafayette PD. He estimates the value of the stolen items at a few thousand dollars.

They then visited a McDonald’s and a Speedway on Highway 231, where they used stolen credit cards.

Surveillance video captured the two vehicles in question: a flatbed truck and a blue Dodge Ram.

Police state the thieves struck two different subdivisions.

At the Landings subdivision, the thieves walked around looking for more victims.

Many people in this neighborhood found footprints in the snow all around their homes. One victim states that is how police found out that someone had tried to break into his garage.

“I’m sure they hit it a couple of times and realized they were not going to get in. They probably took off and ran because of the noise,” stated Buddy Balser.

Balser was not home when it happened, but he is not taking any chances. He’ll be installing a security system soon.

One of his neighbors already did, and after this she is happily spreading the word.

“I think that is one thing that sets our family at ease and I have strongly encouraged my friends and neighbors to go and get the security system,” stated Robyn.
